Dedicated to producing high-quality
wines
from Oregon & Washington... at affordable prices |
More than twenty
years ago, the Fries family of Dundee, Oregon, owned and managed 13
vineyard acres in the North Willamette Valley. Today, they
operate
840 acres in the valleys of northern Oregon and on the slopes of eastern Washington.
-
- "We
sometimes say our winery had to grow as large as it has, because our
family keeps getting bigger," laughs Doug Fries, co- owner and head of
the Fries family.
The
growth of Duck Pond Cellars has also contributed to the
corresponding growth of the Willamette Valley wine region and its
recognition as a world-renowned appellation. Adding
vineyards to the slopes of eastern Washington diversified the
climates in which Duck Pond grapes were grown and expanded the
selection of wines produced by the winery.
With
vineyards in both Oregon and Washington, Duck Pond
Cellars not only increased their number of wine varietals, it also
increased its control of wine quality... from
the vineyard to the bottle. The winery's first vineyard sites were
purchased and planted in Oregon.
Next, the Fries looked to
Washington State for its potential to produce outstanding
Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Today, Duck
Pond Cellars owns and manages 520 vineyard acres in Eastern Washington's
Columbia Valley; in Oregon's Willamette Valley, near Salem, it
owns 320 acres within three vineyard sites where Pinot noir
and
Pinot gris are grown.

The
Duck Pond Cellars story began 1993 in the collective hands of owners Doug and Jo Ann Fries, sons
Greg and Matt, and
daughter Lisa. Together,
they created Duck Pond Cellars. Each family member is committed to
specific winery tasks. Founders Doug and Jo Ann Fries own and
manage all Duck Pond vineyards; son Greg earned his degree in
The Family
fermentation science from U.C. Davis in 1994 and is Duck Pond's winemaker; son-in-law Scott Jenkins is the sales force and works with wife
Lisa on marketing and promotions; son Matt and his wife Erin live on one
of the vineyard properties near
Salem and assist in vineyard development in Oregon.
Duck
Pond Cellars is a treat to visit, not only because
of its high-quality, value-priced wines, but
because of its impressive winery and tasting
room. From May through the summer months, even
the heads of casual passersby on busy Hwy 99W turn to
take in the colorful roadside gardens and grounds of Duck Pond
Cellars.
Stop
in and enjoy some of the winery's latest releases, its
gardens and its tasting room's expansive, well-stocked gift shop. The
wine-country traveler is well-advised to plan their
picnic lunch at Duck Pond Cellars. If you don't
plan to stay a while, you'll wish you had.

2006
Chardonnay
Desert Wind Vineyard
Wahluke Slope, Washington
$12.00 per bottle
Order Now
Full of zesty and fruity flavors, our 2006
Chardonnay reflects the warm sunny weather of the
Columbia Valley. Rugged and desolate, the valleys of
Eastern Washington provide consistent heat and sun
to perfectly ripen the fruit. A slightly lighter
hand with the oak for this vintage results is a wine
with a little more zip and fantastic balance.
A clean finish and bright acidity allow the wine to
go with a variety of light to medium bodied foods:
salad, seafood, chicken or pasta.
2007 Pinot Gris
Willamette Valley, Oregon
$10.00 per bottle
Order Now
Few wines can match lighter fare as well as Pinot
Gris. Its crisp and juicy fruit character is so
perfectly balanced. This wine comes from grapes
planted in the gently rolling hills of the middle
Willamette Valley. The soil is intensely red and
high in minerals; the vineyards are slightly
elevated in altitude, putting them in the path of
constant cooling breezes. These factors imbue this
wine with complexity and backbone. A beautiful
vintage and a dry harvest brought us a crop of
well-developed and ripe fruit. The resulting wine
has a nose of peach, vanilla and lime. The fruit
quality is reflected in the wine’s opulent mouth
feel and gorgeous fresh-fruit palate. Excellent with
shellfish, oysters, cheeses or cold chicken.
Clos d'Pond
Willamette Valley, Oregon
$10.00 per bottle
Order Now
The Clos d'Pond is an exciting blend of Chardonnay,
Gewurztraminer and Muscat. The nose is a bouquet of
aromas including vanilla, jasmine, peach and lime.
The taste of pears and pineapples mingle with honey
and a hint of butterscotch. It feels soft and
weighty in the mouth like nectar but leaves the
palate clean. Enjoy with any meal or alone. Enjoy this wine at a
crisply cool temperature alone or paired with salads, spicy pasta or
cheesecake. Featured Red Wines
2005 Syrah
Desert Wind Vineyard
Wahluke Slope, Washington
$28.00 per bottle
Order Now
Desert Wind Vineyard is located in Eastern
Washington on the Wahluke Slope. This site is
considered a zone 3, the hottest in the Columbia
Valley and is particularly well suited for this
grape lending it powerful fruit flavors and body.
Syrah is a variety rapidly gaining in popularity.
Washington is fast becoming America’s premiere
growing region for Rhône varieties. The desert
climate of hot days and cool nights intensified the
color to an inky purple hue. Only select lots of
grapes were chosen for this special wine and then
aged in French oak barrels for over one year.
Indulge yourself in the wine’s bold fruit, chewy
tannins and dense texture. 98% Syrah, 1%
Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc.
2005
Sangiovese
Columbia Valley, Washington
$20.00 per bottle
Order Now
Eastern Washington sunny days supply the
opportunity for winemaker, Greg Fries to create a
Sangiovese with distinct fruit and supple texture.
The wine exhibits lively aromas of bright cherry and
violets with a hint of toast and vanilla. Its light
to medium body is tempered by notable acidity and
light oak tannins. Flavors of cherry and wild
strawberry are complemented by a slight spiciness
and warm finish. Drink now through 2008.
2006 Pinot Noir
Willamette Valley
$20.00 per bottle
Order Now
Duck Pond allowed the 2006 Pinot Noir an additional four
months of aging prior to bottling to ensure full
tannin integration. The 2006 Pinot Noir marks a
milestone for Duck Pond, as more “115” and “Pomard”
clone plantings from our Duck Pond Estate and St.
Jory Vineyard reached maturity, adding depth and
aromatics to the wine. 92% of the 2006 Pinot
Noir comes directly from estate vineyards. The soil
in these vineyards is primarily Jory soil, a weak
volcanic ash that promotes low-yielding vines.
