A one-of-a-kind place to relax and enjoy
the wine country of Oregon's Columbia Gorge
A
jewel in the Columbia Gorge wine region, Cathedral Ridge Winery invites
the visitor to stay a while and enjoy a relaxed stroll through its grounds
and vineyards. Sit for a while by one
of
the vineyards and enjoy a view of Mt. Adam's summit;
hike to the beautiful meadow above the vineyard and take in a view of Mt.
Hood. Or better yet, attend an event or plan your own in the
hill-top meadow
or on the lawn where guests enjoy a panoramic view of the vineyards and the
mountains as well.
Believe it or not, your visual
delight with this winery's location may prove only secondary to the
enchantment of your tasting experience at Cathedral Ridge.
Distinctive flavors of its premium wines are no accident. At the
hands of Michael Sabastiani, wines produced here reflect this
fourth-generation, Sonoma-family winemaker's commitment to showcasing
characteristics
of the area's terroir and his passion for blended red wines. The
locale of the Cathedral Ridge Winery could not be more ideal for
Michael's zeal.
This Hood River Valley winery sits in the middle of the Cascade Range,
on the Oregon side of the Columbia Gorge appellation. Here a
stirring of marine air from the west and dry desert air from the east
creates a rapid transition of ecosystems... from thick Douglas fir to
scrub oak and Ponderosa pine. This unique transitional zone
makes possible the growing of a wide variety of grapes in a number of
different microclimates.
Michael Sabastiani revels in the variety
of terroir available to him and the nuances they add to his production
of fine Cathedral Ridge wines.
Michael has spent a
lifetime immersed in the creation and enjoyment of wine. Born and raised
in the heart of wine country in the Sonoma Valley, his first experiences
in the industry started when he was 10, working summers in the
vineyards; he tended to vines and helped prepare the grapes for harvest.
A rich soup of wine-related experiences –
the smells of maturing grapes in the vineyard and their heady
aromas at crush, the mechanics of running a winery, the cellar and even
the tasting room –
all nurtured his love and understanding of wine.
Michael
brings his years of experience and joy to his winemaking tasks at Cathedral
Ridge, especially in pursuing his love of blended red wines.
"It's like
being a chef," Michael explains about his enthusiasm for
creating these wines; he thinks of each varietal as a
possible ingredient for his ultimate blended wine.
As "chef"
of wine production at Cathedral Ridge, Michael creates four
signature red blends: 1) Necessity Red - a blend of
pinot noir and zinfandel; 2) Bordheauxd Red - a blend of
syrah, merlot and cabernet sauvignon; 3) Rock Star Red -
a blend of cabernet sauvignon and syrah; and 4) Cabernet
Sauvignon / Merlot - a blend of cabernet sauvignon and
merlot.
In addition to his signature red blends, Michael expresses his
talent and enthusiasm through several other Northwest wines he
produces for Cathedral Ridge Winery... cabernet
sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir, syrah, zinfandel,
chardonnay,
pinot gris, riesling and viognier. The array of
microclimates within the Columbia Gorge appellation gives rise
to varying terroir which in turn brings additional nuanced
characteristics and flavors to the alchemy of Michael Sabastiani's winemaking process.
Come tour the
agriculturally rich Hood
River Valley, and be sure to take time to visit Cathedral Ridge Winery... a
one-of-a-kind place to relax and enjoy the wonderful world of Oregon's
Columbia Gorge wines and its notorious scenery. Rain or shine, the
light-drenched tasting room, light-hearted staff and inspired
wines will lift your spirits and insure a memorable experience. Whether
you come to visit on your own or to join the festivities of a
scheduled event,
you will find large, beautifully landscaped covered areas
extending out from the winery, and a sweeping lawn stretching beyond
to vineyard's edge, creating a
perfect area for outdoor activities and al fresco picnics and events.
If you decide to stay a while, you can talk to the folks next door at
Vineyard View Bed and Breakfast where special discounts are offered
to winery customers and Cathedral Ridge
Wine Club members.

Sauvignon / Merlot

Dark berries, milk chocolate, and cassis on the nose
followed by a smooth, balanced mouth feel & soft tannins on the
finish make this a very approachable red wine. The intent of
our "Cab/Merlot" is to broaden our flavor spectrum of full-bodied
red wines. This wine takes the softest qualities of the two
varietals and blends them together to produce a young and appealing
wine that retains some of the tannin from its parent wines. We
age our Cab/Merlot for up to 11 months in oak barrels, and bottle
the final blend as young-drinking red wine. Even though its
heritage lends to a its bottle-aging potential, it is a wonderful
wine when served young and pleases most red wine admirers.
