The RoxyAnn
Winery Blog
Distinctly Southern
Oregon
The natural beauty
and traditional agricultural practices on the
southwest-facing slopes of Roxy Ann Peak have
changed little over the past century. East of
Medford in Southern Oregon's
Rogue Valley, Hillcrest Orchard has
been operated by the Parsons family since 1908 and has established a
well-deserved reputation for growing world-class fruit.
More recently, on these same slopes, the first plantings
of Hillcrest Vineyard were begun in 1997 - taking
advantage of the property's shallow and ideally suited
limestone-clay soils and the southern solar exposure - to
grow wine grape varietals that thrive at similar
latitudes in the Bordeaux and Rhone Valley regions of
Europe.
Seventy-five acres of estate vineyards are now planted
on the historic agricultural lands of
Hillcrest;
these vineyards produce an excellent variety of Cabernet
Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Syrah, Petite
Sirah, Tempranillo and Viognier, contributing to the
production of more than 15,000 cases of RoxyAnn wine
annually. As for the
future, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay
recently were added to RoxyAnn vineyard plantings with
first releases due sometime in 2014.
Currently, grapes for RoxyAnn's white wines –
Pinot Gris and Viognier – come
from other vineyards in the region, like Don and Traute Moore’s
vineyards and Pheasant Hill. Others come from the
Willamette Valley.
Hillcrest
introduced RoxyAnn Winery in 2002.
Its mission was, and is, to
produce world-class wines, while supporting the Parsons
family's commitment to preserving this land for future
generations. Both the orchard and the vineyards
honor the this land's agricultural heritage by insuring
both are cultivated under
sustainable land
management practices. These
practices promote the natural character
of the estate which carries through in the taste of the
fruit and the ripe, concentrated
character of RoxyAnn wines – wines that possess rich color,
complexity and concentration.
"A winemaker can't craft wines that surpass the quality
of the fruit," notes winemaker John Quinones.
"It's our
job to fully develop, preserve and showcase what comes
from the vineyard.
With appropriate viticulture
practices, the desired flavor profiles, balance and texture
can be developed in the vineyard, long before the grapes
are brought into the winery."
Quinones' stylistic trait in his wines is balance with texture. "I am
very focused on the texture of a wine," he explains.
"The balance of
the fruit, acidity, tannins, etc., is what creates a
wine's texture. When the balance is right, the wine is
in harmony and will simply feel good in your mouth."
Inside the
historic Hillcrest "Honor Barn," RoxyAnn Winery and
Hillcrest Orchard welcome visitors daily with a blend of
hospitality, wine tasting and produce sales. The
Honor Barn, was built as part of the original property
in 1900 and has earned a place on National Register of
Historic Places along with 10 other structures still on
the property. The Barn earned its name from the local
community who purchased their fresh peaches, pears and
apples and left their money in the “honor box” to pay.
The honor system is still very much alive and well at
RoxyAnn where every year Hillcrest Fruit can still be
found for sale right outside the doors of the Tasting
Room. The entire barn was renovated into a
spacious tasting room in 2006, including a state of the
art kitchen, tasting bar, expansive seating and a
temperature-controlled storage room. The original
beams and hardwood-plank floors remain as unmistakable
reminders of the history that marks this proud and
still-operating farm, a history also marked by one of
RoxyAnn's popular red blends... Honor Barn Red. Consider bringing a picnic
to enjoy while surrounded by beautiful
gardens overlooking the vineyard and
the orchard. No doubt RoxyAnn Winery and Hillcrest
Orchard will become a rich memory of your Rogue Valley
wine country trip.
