Southwest Washington Wine Country

The Southwest Washington area, from Tenino to the Oregon border along the I-5 corridor, is home to more than a dozen wineries (as of November 1, 2009); a number of others are in the process of opening their doors in this low-profile segment of the State's wine community.  Currently, SW Washington wineries are clustered loosely into two areas along the interstate corridor:

With the railroad following this primary route between Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR, the area is rich in the history of early settlements and even in the history of winemaking... a winemaking history that dates back to Vancouver's Fort Vancouver days of the 19th century.

Today, the wineries located along this stretch west of the Cascades source most of their wine grapes from Oregon's Willamette Valley to the south - grapes such as Pinot Noir, and from vineyards in Eastern Washington planted to Bordeaux or Rhone varietals.  A few wineries in Southwest Washington have planted estate vineyards as well, using Pinot Noir and other cool-climate grapes like those grown across the Columbia River in the neighboring Willamette Valley.   From a visitor's standpoint, there is no shortage of terrific places to stay and eat in the Vancouver, WA, Portland, OR, and other nearby areas.
