Washington Wineries & Wine Regions Yakima Valley,
Rattlesnake Hills & Red
Mountain
...the wineries, the wine country and the wines
Wine Shops & Wine Bars Real Estate
Keep your eye on the appellations of Yakima Valley and Red Mountain
(Washington State's
smallest).
Currently, more than 70 Washington
wineries are located in the Yakima Valley,
Rattlesnake Hills and Red Mountain wine regions,
with several more planned. Not all are open for public
tasting. Be sure to allow time to wander the many back roads of the area
where most vineyards are located. And during harvest season in the
fall, roll down the window and breathe deep.
Yakima Valley, Red Mountain
and Rattlesnake Hills wine regions are among Washington's most important
appellations. More than 98% of Washington's wine grapes are grown in
vineyards east of the State's Cascade mountain range, and a large
percentage of those grapes are grown within the boundaries of the Yakima
Valley appellation. The Yakima Valley appellation encompasses both the Red
Mountain and Rattlesnake Hills appellations, and its own boundaries lie within the
much larger
Columbia Valley appellation.
In 1983 , the Yakima Valley appellation was determined distinct from the
larger Columbia Valley appellation that surrounds it, and it was
authorized as an official American Viticultural Area (AVA/appellation).
The three east-to-west geologic folds in the earth's crust, running east
from the City of Yakima -- the Ahtanum Ridge, the
Rattlesnake Hills and the Horse Heaven Hills
-- were the primary land masses associated with distinguishing the
boundaries of this river valley carved by the Yakima River. A system of
canals and wells, along with the
Columbia, Yakima and Snake Rivers, supplies growers in this dry valley with ample water to
carefully control irrigation of their vineyards. The availability of water has transformed
the Yakima and Columbia Valleys into the largest and most productive
wine
regions in the Northwest. Come visit and discover a country full of
vineyards, orchards, hop yards and row
crops.
Navigating
the Yakima Valley
and Red Mountain Appellations
Wine Shops & Wine Bars Real Estate
Wines Northwest organizes wine
touring information related to the Yakima Valley and Red Mountain wines region
in two
sections -- Yakima Valley West and Yakima
Valley East. Since the Red
Mountain Appellation is located in the southeastern portion of
the Yakima Valley, its wineries are shown on the Yakima Valley East
map below. Some wineries shown on the maps have opted to provide full-pages of information about their wineries
-- pages that describe their facilities, services, events, and the wines they offer
visitors. Click on winery names in blue type below to get the details.
Use the maps to locate and explore the Yakima wineries and Red Mountain
wineries of your choice. Watch
for links to explore nearby lodging, dining and
touring
suggestions in corresponding areas.
You may also
want to check our Winery and Merchant Finder to find other Washington wineries located in the Yakima Valley
and Red Mountain wine regions, wineries not listed below
that are rarely open to the public. Some may at least provide private tastings
by appointment.
